Michael Gao, Department of Medicine, Weill Cornell

This week’s LEAD spotlight is Dr. Michael Gao, a Hospitalist in the Department of Medicine at NYP Weill Cornell and Silverman Fellow in Healthcare Innovation at NYP Transformation. His capstone project is the development and implementation of Qventus, a virtual decision management platform that uses artificial intelligence to convert millions of electronic datapoints into actionable patient-level insights. This enables the patient’s care team to resolve bottlenecks before they occur, thus improving patient flow and reducing length of stay.

Project Name: Development and Implementation of Qventus
Mentor: David Tsay
Sponsor: Peter Fleischut
Goal:
Today’s healthcare environment is complex: excellent and efficient patient care has many dimensions and is dependent on the seamless coordination among dozens of healthcare services. Consequently, even small delays can have an outsized impact on length of stay. To address this, Dr. Gao is developing and implementing Qventus, a virtual decision management platform that uses artificial intelligence to convert millions of electronic datapoints into actionable patient-level insights. This enables the patient’s care team to resolve bottlenecks before they occur, thus improving patient flow and reducing length of stay. The project has been made possible by contributions from many leaders within Physician, Nursing, Care Management, Social Work, Information Technology, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Radiology, Laboratory, and other services. In addition to these individuals, Dr. Gao would like to thank Dr. Peter Fleischut and Dr. David Tsay for their guidance and support.
